YMCA BODHINILAYAM SCHOOL (The School for the mentally challenged)
Bodhinilayam is an ongoing project of the Kottayam YMCA. It was started in 1989 to train mentally challenged children, to help them to overcome their disabilities and to give them vocational training. In 1992 it came under the Charitable and Community Service Trust created by the YMCA to carry on this and similar projects.
At present the school has 46 children of various ages having different levels of disability. They are being looked after by four specially trained dedicated teachers.
The YMCA has plans to shift the school to an independent site so that better facilities can be offered to the children.
We recognise that mentally challenged people are God's children like others and are entitled to live their life in all its fullness, to the extent possible. We believe that they have a right to live with self - respect and human dignity.
To this end we are committed to giving children with special needs care and support, and training in vocational skills, in order that, thay can overcome their disabilities, become less dependent on others and come into the mainstream of life in society.
Through this humble effort we are trying to bring hope and encouragement to the disadvantaged and marginalised fellow human beings, so that we as well as they can experience God's mercy and love,
"Anything you did for these my brothers here, however humble, you did for me".
